the word amamfengu comes from a xhosa word "uku mfenguza"- to batter or exchange something for another. our family was at the hospitality of the xhosas pre and post mfecane era, we had cattle with no land and the xhosas had land without cattle, thus uku mfenguza was coined and bestowed among the displaced tribes. most clans in the ec are not xhosa by origin but were assimilated into the xhosa culture and to name a few, amazizi, amabhele, ooradebe, sithole/magazi, mntambo etc
